The ЭН3 (EN3) is in the electric locomotive factory Nowotscherkassk built railcar of RŽD , specifically in duplicate for railway tracks with nets of 25 kV AC is used 50 Hz. It belongs to a series of electric multiple units for three-phase drive with recuperation brake . The name is derived from E lektrozug made in Novocherkassk , 3rd type. In addition to the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory, the vehicle was also developed by the ВЭлНИИ (Welnii) design institute .

history

Prehistory to the creation

The vehicle was developed as a solution for electric passenger transport at RŽD , in order to prevent uneconomical covering of short passenger trains with large electric trains. That is why the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory made the decision to develop suburban trains. This decision led to the development and testing of the ЭН1 (EN1) electric train . In 1996 a section of this train was manufactured in the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory and then tested on the track ring of the All-Russian Research Institute for Rail Transport in Shcherbinka . The peculiarity of the section compared to other previously executed vehicles was the design with a new type of three-phase drive technology. In connection with the new drive technology, some problems arose during the review, so that the RŽD recommended the development of a new electric train ЭН3 (EN3) and at the same time canceled the ЭН1 (EN1) project . So the electric train ЭН3 (EN3) appeared.

Creation of the multiple unit

Work on the ЭН3 was completed in 1998. A suburban electric multiple unit for power grids with alternating current was built. The drive of the three-phase drive motors was controlled via thyristors . In addition, the train received a recuperation brake . The following companies worked on the train; the machine works Demichowo (they made the car body and the bogies), Сибстанкоэлектропривод (Sibstankoelektropriwod), МИИТ (MIIT) and VNIIZhT , the latter developed the traction drives and the microprocessor control. The electric train consists of a 5-car unit, with two control cars , two motor cars and a sidecar driving in each unit .

The peculiarity of the interior of the vehicles is the design with soft seats and the presence of a bar. The vehicles are illuminated by fluorescent lamps . The vehicle is designed for the disabled.

Both vehicles were presented to the public in 2000. Despite the positive impression of the vehicle, there was no series production due to the financial situation of RŽD. The vehicles are now at the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory .
