RIS index

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The RIS index is a standardized format for the geo-referenced description of the waterway infrastructure. In this context, the abbreviation RIS stands for River Information Service .

All objects relevant to inland navigation (e.g. ports , berths , locks , bridges , water levels , etc.) are clearly identified throughout Europe with a 20-digit reference number. It is composed as follows:
XX = 2 digits for the country code
XXX = 3 digits for the location code
XXXXX = 5 digits for the waterway code
XXXXX = 5 digits for the object reference code (what kind of object is that)
XXXXX = 5 digits for the hectometer code (Kilometers of the waterway, rounded to a full hundred meters, e.g. 45.450 km are 00455 hectometers)

Example: DEREG00406B011123796 marks the stone bridge in Regensburg over the Danube at kilometer 2379.6.

In Germany, the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) is responsible for the RIS index.
