ŽRK Olimpija Ljubljana ( Ženski rokometni klub Olimpija Ljubljana ) is a Slovenian women's handball club from Ljubljana .

history

The ŽRK Olimpija Ljubljana was founded in the summer of 1949 by Mitja Vidic under the name Sportgemeinschaft Enotnost (športnega društva Enotnost). Mitja Vidic was a functionary in the club until 1991 and its biggest driver. The handball school for young people bears his name in his honor. At the beginning of the club's history, full-field handball was played as was customary back then. Just a year later the sports community disintegrated and the handball club RK Enotnost Ljubljana was founded, which was renamed RK Svoboda in 1953. The first success was at a Yugoslav tournament in which the promotion to the 1st Yugoslav League could be achieved by first place. There they stayed in the upper third for the first few years until the successes failed to materialize over time. Since 1961, the small field has been played as we still know it today. In 1964 there was relegation from the first Yugoslav league to the second division, Ljubljana district. One year in 1965, RK Svoboda and RS Olimpija (handball division Olimpija) merged to form RK Svoboda-Olimpija Ljubljana. When, in 1968, the third club from Ljubljana, which was also the most successful at the time, RK Šiška, merged with the two clubs, the now known club RK Olimpija Ljubljana was formed. It was not until 1983 that they were promoted to the first Yugoslav league under new management, but with the same ambitious goal. However, you never became a Yugoslav champion.

After the break-up of Yugoslavia, the Slovenian League was founded, which was dominated at the beginning, and champions were won 3 years in a row. They were also twice cup winners. The greatest success in the club's history was achieved in 1996/97 when they won the EHF Cup.

Due to the mismanagement in the club, however, the success story flattened which meant 2011/12 with the first relegation from the Slovenian first division. The year before, they only played with semi-professionals from the youth team and were just able to hold the league. Due to the accumulated debts between 2008 and 2012, the club had to file for bankruptcy at the end of the 2013/14 season.
