RM-70 (armored version)

The RM-70 is a multiple rocket launcher ( referred to as a projectile launcher in the National People's Army ) that was put into service by the Czechoslovak People's Army in 1972 and by the NVA in 1974. It is a heavier Czechoslovak variant of the Soviet multiple rocket launcher BM-21 .

The RM-70 was manufactured in Czechoslovakia (ČSSR) and introduced into the armament in 1972, it was based on the Tatra 813 and was lightly armored. Since 1973 it was also sold to the GDR . After the end of the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia, it was sold to various countries in Africa, Europe, America and Asia. Approx. 5 mm steel protect the crew from fragmentation and light infantry fire . Every third thrower had a sliding sign.

The launching device is essentially the same as the BM-21, has 40 tubes and a reloading device, which makes it possible to carry a further 40 rockets in addition to the projectiles in the tube package. The caliber of the launch tubes is 122.4 mm, they are smooth and have a groove for the initial spin and guidance of the rocket. The M210F bullet type is fired , it weighs 66.35 kg and has a 20 kg octogen warhead . The range of the storeys is up to 20,380 m. The distance can be influenced by means of brake rings: from 1,400 m - large brake ring - to 21,000 m without brake ring. The bullet is armed 400 m after being fired. It takes 22 seconds to fire a volley. Approx. 1 hectare area is covered by a volley of throwers.

The crew, consisting of the thrower operator, the thrower driver and the directional gunner (K1), is either in the driver's cab or in raised cover behind the thrower (remote ignition with a cable drum). It takes 35 seconds to load a second salvo after activating the reloading device. At the NVA, one, in the case of mobilization, two ammunition gunners (K3 and K4) supplemented the throwing crew outside the firing position . The combat weight when fully loaded is 25,500 kg.

The RM-70/85, used by the NVA as the RM-70M projectile launcher, is based on the Tatra 815 , has the same combat parameters, but is not armored. It was introduced from 1988 to 1989 and was intended to replace the RM-70 in the armament of the NVA in stages.
