The RM 5101 and 5102 accumulator railcars were test vehicles that were put into operation by the Italian railway company Società per le Strade Ferrate del Mediterraneo , operator of the Rete Mediterranea , from 1899. They are considered the first electric railway vehicles in Italy and were used on the Chiasso – Milan railway between Milan and Monza.
The vehicle construction part was created by the vehicle manufacturer Grondona, Comi & C. in Milan (later incorporated into the Officine Meccaniche ), the accumulators and the electrical part were supplied by P. Henserberger in Monza , a subsidiary of Schuckert & Co. Due to problems, the vehicles were taken out of service again in 1904.
