As a remote radio head , short RRH , or Remote Radio Unit , in short RRU the exterior grade, all-weather resistant mounting is the mobile power supply , transmitter and receiver module ( transceiver ), output amplifier and duplex filter to the antenna tower called. Communication with the base station usually takes place via a fiber optic connection .

When mounted directly on the antenna mast is - because of the shorter HF - line (usually a waveguide ) to the antenna - a lower transmit power required, which the efficiency greatly increased. In addition, the transmission mast can be set up several kilometers from the base station (for LTE : eNode B, for UMTS : Node B , for GSM : BTS ).
