Frederick William Sievers (born October 26, 1872 in Fort Wayne , Indiana , † July 4, 1966 in Richmond , Virginia ) was an American sculptor. He is known for the great Virginia Memorial on the battlefield near Gettysburg , Pennsylvania .

Life

Sievers studied at the academies in Rome and Paris . In 1910 he received the order for the Virginia Memorial at the battlefield in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In the same year he opened a studio in Richmond, Virginia.

The Virginia Memorial was a great success, and in the following years Sievers received commissions for Civil War memorials in Elmira ( New York ), Abingdon (Virginia) , Leesburg (Virginia), Louisa (Virginia), Pulaski County (Virginia), Vicksburg ( Mississippi ) and portrait busts of Stonewall Jackson and Matthew Fontaine Maury , both on Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia.

The state capitol of Virginia contains four portrait busts of Sievers: presidents James Madison and Zachary Taylor, and busts of Patrick Henry and Sam Houston .

A plaque to commemorate him is by his studio: West 43rd Street on Forest Hill Avenue in South Richmond.
