RS / 6000 type 7026 model H70 (2001)
The IBM RS / 6000 was introduced in 1990, number of Unix - workstations and servers caused by the IBM p system was replaced. The computers were delivered with the IBM Unix derivative AIX . RS / 6000 stood for RISC System / 6000. In the RS / 6000 series computers were available from small desktop computers to multi-way computer clusters .
The RS / 6000 computers are no longer sold today, but many devices are still in use in many companies or universities . The successor series of IBM is the System p and since 2004 the IBM eServer p5 .
history
The RISC System / 6000 was the successor to the Unix-based IBM RT . While the MCA bus was still used in the first RS / 6000 models , the newer models used the PCI bus. Some later models used the standardized PReP and CHRP platforms that were jointly developed with Apple and Motorola . It was planned to use many different operating systems such as Windows NT , NetWare , OS / 2 , Solaris , Taligent , AIX and MacOS . However, only the Unix variant AIX was used and supported by IBM.
There were different types of RS / 6000 computers: POWERserver ( server ), POWERstation ( workstation ) and Scalable POWERparallel ( supercomputer ). While most computers were housed in desktop, tower or rack cases, there were also two laptop models (model N40 and model 860).
Some well-known computers are based on the RISC System / 6000. For example the chess computer Deep Blue , which defeated the then world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997 , or the supercomputer ASCI White , which was the fastest computer in the world from 2000 to 2002.

The Model N40 was a PowerPC based notebook, which was developed and manufactured by Tadpole Technology for IBM. It was sold for US $ 12,000 on March 25, 1994. The internal battery could only supply the system with energy for about 45 minutes, which is why an external battery pack was available for this notebook.
