Certificate of honor for Rieger and Dietz from 1880

In 1828 three Aalen citizens acquired a wire-drawing facility that had existed on Erlen-Au am Kocher in Aalen since 1795 . In 1875 the company called "Erlau" was converted into a (now southern Germany's oldest) stock corporation. In 1875, a few kilometers down the stove, Carl Rieger and Friedrich Dietz, with 16 employees at the time, founded a green meadow, now called "Peace Island", also a "chain forge and factory of Drahthorden for malting, hops and chicory kilns". As early as 1880 they received a certificate of honor (see below) with “royal recognition” for their chain products made of the highest quality, which were mainly used in agriculture.

In 1900 the industrial age arrived at RUD. The forge was already developing into a factory: a Voith water turbine and the steam power of a “locomobile” provided energy - and the world's first attempts with electric chain welding were successful. In 1910 the first “ladder chain” for rubber tires for “motor carts”, later automobiles, was produced.

In 1925, the third generation of the Rieger family joined the company because co-founder Friedrich Dietz was childless. Werner Rieger invented the "Original RUD track chain" in 1935, which became known as the "mother of all modern snow chains". A quality chain sector positioned itself as a second pillar alongside the tire chain after the Second World War.

In 1953, RUD received the first official approval for high-strength chains in the quality chain sector and thus the H1 ranking. This was followed by the initial certification as a chain manufacturer with an integrated quality and environmental management system according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 . In 1955, the tire protection chains were created to protect the tires of work machines with pneumatic tires above and below ground. In 1972, own manufacturing subsidiaries, sales subsidiaries and branches were founded in quick succession. Brazil was the beginning, Great Britain, Switzerland, Austria, Scandinavia, France, Spain and the overseas USA and South Africa followed, as did China and India later.

At the “centenary” in 1975 with more than 1000 employees, the company founded two non-profit organizations: The Trude Eipperle Rieger Foundation and the Otto Rieger Foundation are dedicated to promoting culture, science and common sense - with considerable financial commitment.

As a competitor company operating in parallel for many years (and the place of origin of the RUD founders), Erlau AG joined the RUD corporate group in 1988.

In 2003, Jörg Steffen Rieger, Johannes Rieger and Florian Rieger became the fifth generation to manage the company. Florian Rieger died in Romania in a traffic accident in 2004. In 2009 the last son, Benjamin Rieger, joined the company's management.

In 2010 the international team consisted of 1,400 employees worldwide.

In 2018 Erlau AG merged with RUD Ketten Rieger & Dietz GmbH u. Co. KG, of which the company was previously a subsidiary. Since then, Erlau has been a brand of the RUD Group.

Corporate structure

The RUD Ketten Rieger & Dietz GmbH u. Co. KG is divided into seven company divisions: RUD lifting and lashing equipment, RUD conveyor systems, RUD lifting and drive technology, RUD tire protection chains, RUD anti-skid chains, RUD military technology and RUD BarrierTech GmbH.

In addition, RUD manufactures object furnishings for indoor and outdoor use under the Erlau brand:

The “outdoor facility” includes stable, weatherproof furniture for outdoor facilities, e.g. B. by municipalities, companies or transport companies. These include benches, seating groups, tables and chairs, loungers, waste bins, bicycle parking systems, bollards, planters, mobile table beds and exercise equipment.

The "Interior furnishings" manufactures products for barrier-free sanitary areas. These include support and grab bar systems, shower seats, shower rails, shower handrails, shower curtain rails, bathtub entry aids and bathroom accessories such as towel rails or various shelves. The products from the "Interior furnishing" area are used in private bathrooms and public sanitary facilities, be it in hospitals, nursing homes or swimming pools.
