The Ra'ad ALCM ( Urdu رعد; Ra'ad means thunder in Arabic ) is an airborne cruise missile from Pakistani development. It is used by various weapon platforms of the Pakistani Air Force .
development
After the successful test of the first Pakistani cruise missile Babur in 2005, the Ra'ad was originally planned as a modification of it to be usable from airplanes. But as the official name Hatf VIII (the Babur runs under Hatf VII) and the new name show, a new weapon was finally developed. The first successful test took place on August 25, 2007, the first downing of an aircraft (a Dassault Mirage III ROSE ) on May 8, 2008.
Technical characteristics
The airframe is designed by the shape and the choice of materials in such a way that the detectability by radar is reduced ( stealth technology ). This increases the likelihood of hitting heavily defended targets such as enemy command posts, radar positions and stationary air defense systems. With a range of 350 kilometers, the weapon has a "very high accuracy" according to official sources. It should also be usable against ships.
Although the missile was launched from a Mirage III in tests, other platforms, notably the JF-17 , are intended for normal operational use .
