Altenburg

The Altenburg is an abandoned high medieval fortification on a tiny mountain spur above the Lambertsbach valley in the municipality of Nazza in the Wartburg district ( Thuringia ) - on the western edge of the Hainich .

location

The castle site of the Spornburg is located at 305  m above sea level. NN about 1200 m north-northwest of the center of the village of Nazza, just below the old road running there to the neighboring village of Hallungen . The castle is opposite the Haineck Castle and was apparently part of a Landwehr fortification.

history

The Nazza valley with the Lempertsbach was already important in early history and marks an old connecting road from the Werra valley over the Struppeiche into the Thuringian heartland. In the Middle Ages, the Nazza settlement was ruled by an aristocratic family who initially took up their seat in the fortifications known as Altenburg ; the Haineck castle ruins , which dominate the valley today , came into being late - construction began in 1392 - and assumed the protective function of the road and village. With the expansion of the Landwehr fortifications around Nazza, which was largely completed around 1500, the Altenburg, like the nearby Hassenburg , could once again have assumed a key function as a control room , at the latest after the Landwehr fortifications were abandoned , the fate of the Altenburg was sealed.

description

General plan

The facility is located on the edge of the slope, above the steep slope leading to the Lampertsbach, its maximum size (including the ditch) is around 50 × 40 m. The mountain spur was separated from the forecourt by creating a neck ditch formed in a third of a circle, whereby the excavation was apparently used to fill a tower foundation and protective wall. The castle courtyard only offered space for a few buildings, so it is likely that the remains of a bailey are still in the immediate vicinity, in the arable land northwest of the castle site.

In the adjacent plan: (A) the tower hill, (B) the courtyard and (C) the moat ; Altenburg (1), Haineck Castle (2), location Nazza (3), the Landwehr (4) and the location of a presumed guard tower (5).

status

The castle site is a protected ground monument . The area in question is used for agriculture and forestry.
