Rabbel II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rabbel II. Soter ( Rabb'īl ) was the last king of the Nabataeans from 70 to 106 .

After the death of his father Malichus II , Rabbel became king of Nabatea as a child. His mother Šagīlat took over the government in the early years. His sister Gāmilat became Queen of the Nabataeans as the wife of Rabbel. Rabbel called himself Soter ("Savior [of the people]"). After his death, the Roman Emperor Trajan conquered the Nabataean Empire on March 22nd, 106 with almost no resistance. Nabatea became the Roman province of Arabia with Bosra as its capital.

Some ancient documents are dated after the reign of Rabbel II (e.g. in the Babatha archives ). It is unclear whether the year 70 or 71 is the first year of government.
