Rachuonyo District was a district in Nyanza Province in Kenya . The district capital was Oyugis . The Rachuonyo District was divided into four divisions: Kasipul, Kabondo, East Karachounyo and West Karachounyo. The district bordered Lake Victoria to the north and west . 77% of the people in the district lived below the poverty line. As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan districts were dissolved. The area is now part of Homa Bay County .
economy
70% of the population worked in agriculture. Mainly corn , millet , tobacco , coffee beans , tea and cotton were grown.
education
In 2005, Rachuonyo District had 339 primary schools and 58 secondary schools . 15% of the boys and 20% of the girls did not finish primary school, and the drop-out rate in secondary schools was 20%.
Healthcare
The district had 36 health care facilities in 2005, including four hospitals. There were 150,000 potential patients for one doctor. Malaria and pneumonia were treated most frequently . The HIV - prevalence in 2001 was 30% a year. The infant mortality rate in 2001 was 8.7%, 10.2% of the children died before their 5th birthday. The average life expectancy was 47 years. In Oyugis the Roman Catholic Church ran a home and a vocational training center for blind and deaf people, and in Kendu Bay a children's home.
