history

The Forster Radrennbahn was opened on June 17, 1906 with a stalking race over 30 kilometers in front of around 10,000 spectators. First winner was Richard Heidenreich from Breslau ahead of Eugen Stabe . For years, Stabe was the crowd favorite of Forster Visitors.

The builder of the railway was the Forster building contractor Adolf Dernack. In the following years it proved to be particularly suitable for standing races; the most prominent drivers started in Forst: Thaddäus Robl , Arthur and Léon Vanderstuyft (Belgium), Walter Sawall , Piet Dickentman (Netherlands), Walter Lohmann , Erich Metze and many others.

In 1932, the film "Strich durch dierechnung" with Heinz Rühmann was shot on the railway .

During the Second World War , the track was used as a drill area and was badly damaged. In August 1951 she was released for training again; on May 20, 1952, the renovated railway was inaugurated to the public. 14,000 spectators came to the first standing race on June 29, 1952; The winner was Gerhard Huschke . In the following years several GDR championships were held on the track in Forst. In 1964, however, the railway had to be shut down because of its poor condition - as it did several times in the following years. For the 700th anniversary of the city of Forst one year later, the cycling track with a new concrete surface was put back into operation. However, it had to be closed again in the 1980s. In May 1986 the cycling track was reopened after renovation.

The last time the railway was renovated from 1992 to 1994 for 1.4 million marks. In the years 1996, 1998, 2006, 2009 and 2014 the European championships of the stayers took place in Forst. In addition, the Forster Radrennbahn was the venue for several German championships for the stayers in the following years. For this purpose, the Radrennbahn acquired eight MZ brand motorcycles that had been converted into pacemaker machines , in different colors with matching suits for the pacemaker. In 1995, the German Derny Championship was held on the cycle track in Forst .

Every year in September, the saddle festival, a riding and jumping tournament, takes place in the stadium (for the eleventh time in 2018). In 2019, the festival was suspended due to the spatial and temporal proximity of the World Pairs Championship in Drebkau .

In 2019, the city received 2.6 million euros from the federal program "Renovation of municipal facilities in the fields of sport, youth and culture" for a new renovation of the stadium.
