Radio Austria ( spelling : radioaustria ) is an Austrian private radio broadcaster . After the first application for a nationwide license was submitted in 2018, Radio Austria went on air on October 26, 2019. After Kronehit, it is the second Austrian private broadcaster with such a license. The transmitter is operated by Radio Austria GmbH (originally: Antenne Österreich Mediengesellschaft ). This belongs to the group of companies run by Wolfgang Fellner , who is also the owner of the tabloid Austria . There is no connection with Radio Austria AG, which existed from 1923 to 2002 .

History of origin

On January 23, 2018, the then so-called Antenne “Österreich” und Medieninnovationen GmbH , behind which the Fellner family stands, submitted an application for a nationwide broadcasting license to the Austrian communications authority. Their issuance is associated with high legal requirements, including at least sixty percent coverage of the Austrian territory. In order to achieve this, the licenses from Oe24 , Antenne Salzburg , Antenne Tirol and other local broadcasters were combined within the aforementioned GmbH . The coverage was supplemented by the broadcasting areas Upper Austria Central , Klagenfurt and Graz of the broadcaster LoungeFM . However, since the broadcast license for Upper Austria Mitte expired on January 25, 2018, the communications authority refused to grant the nationwide license. After the license for the affected area was re-issued, a new application was made in 2018, which was granted in February 2019. The broadcast started on October 26, 2019, the Austrian national holiday , on around 60 frequencies spread across the whole of Germany. The first broadcast was a morning show hosted by Rudolf Klausnitzer and Wolfgang Fellner themselves.

In the run-up to the start of broadcasting, the station Kronehit , which had for the first time had a competitor under private law in Radio Austria , sought legal action against the new station. Kronehit had taken over claims on the insolvent Radio Oberland GmbH (the former owner of Lounge FM). It was argued that the creditors had received no money from the sale or the increase in value from the nationwide license. The trustee of Radio Oberland GmbH rejected the claims as unfounded.

program

According to its own statements, Radio Austria focuses on a “consciously adult radio program”, which is supposed to contrast with the program of its competitor Kronehit, which is aimed at a younger target group. The music selection is therefore under the motto Sound of your Life and includes not only the current hit parades but also hits from the 80s, 90s and, above all, 2000s, as well as Austrian pop . As a further focus of the program Fellner named extensive news programs, also on regional topics. The most important programs include the daily morning show “Good Morning Austria”, which is alternately moderated by Rudolf Klausnitzer , Wolfgang Fellner and program director Alex Nausner , as well as the midday interview program “VIP Lounge”, and during the afternoon the “Hit-Wahl” as well an "Austria Show" with daily news. In the evening program, “Radio Austria Live” reports on the evening's events.

Range

In Radio test for the second half of 2019 and the first half of 2020 had Radio Austria in the age group 14 to 49 years a range of 1.9%. The largest private broadcaster was Kronehit, with a reach of 14.4%.
