Hendrik Abelsen

Hendrik David Søren Abelsen (born February 9, 1916 in Qassimiut ; † unknown ) was a Greenlandic pastor , catechist and councilor .

Hendrik Abelsen was the son of the catechist Boas Isak Lars Benjamin Abelsen (1893–1964) and his wife Agathe Kristine Kirsten Konkordia Apollonia Poulsen (1893–1968). He married the Danish kindergarten teacher Kirsten Munch (1924–?) On March 9, 1969.

He was trained as a catechist at Grønland's seminary . In 1936 he worked in Avannarliit . Only one year later he was moved to East Greenland, where he worked in Kuummiit until 1962 . He then continued his education in Denmark at Københavns Universitet and Løgumkloster and was ordained pastor in 1963 . He then served as pastor of Tasiilaq until 1976 before retiring.

From 1961 to 1963, Hendrik Abelsen was the first regional councilor for constituency 15, which consisted of the later municipality of Ammassalik . In the late 1930s he started fishing in East Greenland. He was also Kuummiit's first store manager. He was the holder of the Fortjenstmedaljen in silver. In 1981 he received the Greenland Christmas stamp award.
