Avannarliit [ aˌvanːɑˈɬːiːtˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Avangnardlît ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the Ilulissat district in the Avannaata Kommunia .
location
Avannarliit located south of Kangiata Sullua (Ilulissat Icefjord) on the east coast of Disko Bay . On the other side of the fjord ten kilometers north is Ilulissat and five kilometers south is Ilimanaq .
history
Avannarliit was already inhabited before the colonial era, which ruins, old graves and old stories testify. It is said that the place used to be the most populated residential area south of the fjord. By 1778 most of the pagans in the mission district lived here. Originally there were three living spaces right next to each other: Qaarsormiut , Narsarmiut and Illumiut a little further south. Together with Eqi , a little further north, these residential areas were grouped under the Danish name Claushavns nordre Huse because they were north of the mission box in Ilimanaq (Claushavn). In 1805 64 people lived in Qaarsormiut and Narsarmiut, while Illumiut was uninhabited. In 1850 Qaarsormiut, Narsarmiut, Illumiut and Eqi had a total of 131 inhabitants.
As part of the Claushavn Mission District, Avannarliit was part of the Christianshaab colonial district . In 1911 Avannarliit became part of the Claushavn municipality. In 1915 there were 91 inhabitants. There were fifteen hunters, six fishermen and one catechist. The residents lived in twelve houses. There was also a school building from 1912, which was built as a half-timbered building with a peat wall facade and high roof. In 1930 a new school chapel was built. In 1940 Avannarliit had 94 inhabitants. In 1950 Avannarliit was incorporated into the new municipality of Qasigiannguit . In 1950 only 52 people lived in the village and in 1959 Avannarliit was abandoned. Only then was the municipal boundary moved so that the abandoned place became part of the Ilulissat municipality .
