Nuugaaq [ nuːˈɣɑːq ] (according to the old spelling Nûgâĸ ) is a desolate Greenlandic settlement in the Ilulissat district in the Avannaata Kommunia .

location

Nuugaaq is at the tip of a peninsula at the point where the Qeqertap Ilua fjord joins the Torsukattak . Qeqertaq is just under four kilometers north.

history

Nuugaaq was inhabited long before the colonial era, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds of stone tools. In 1793 five families with a total of 40 people lived in Nuugaaq. In 1805 the place was uninhabited, but people lived here again in 1811 and 1812. In 1816 Nuugaaq had 29 inhabitants. In 1826 it was said that the school children were extremely capable, but the population was starving because of a lack of seals. In 1850 no one lived in Nuugaaq again, but in 1855 the place was inhabited again.

Nuugaaq was part of the municipality of Qeqertaq from 1911. In 1915 there were 38 inhabitants. There were eight houses and a morgue, which had been built as a half-timbered building with a peat wall facade. Nine hunters, a fisherman, a catechist and a midwife lived in the village. It is said that the people of Nuugaaq were more successful and wealthy than those of Qeqertaq. In 1930 the place had only 27 inhabitants. In 1940 the last eleven people finally left the apartment.
