In June 2005 LoungeFM was launched as the world's first radio that can only be received via UMTS in the network of the mobile provider ONE (today Hutchison Drei Austria ). Shortly afterwards, LoungeFM went online as web radio. From 2008 to 2010 LoungeFM was the official radio for the internet presence of the newspaper Der Standard . The hourly news for the program also comes from the newsroom at www.derStandard.at. Since May 29, 2008 LoungeFM can be heard on FM in Upper Austria in Linz, Wels, Freistadt and Steyr. In 2010 the transmission area was expanded to include Gmunden. The station also started in Klagenfurt in 2011, followed in 2014 in Salzburg and Innsbruck ( Schlotthof station ), and Inzing in 2015. In Vienna, the station can be received as part of a time-limited "event frequency".

LoungeFM went the opposite way to most other radio stations. Started as digital radio, the path to analogue reception via VHF followed later.

Germany

On August 1, 2011, the station launched a specially designed program nationwide in Germany via DAB +. At the beginning of 2013, an application for bankruptcy was filed against the German subsidiary of LoungeFM. On June 12, 2013, the program could no longer be received via DAB + for a few hours after midday, but only via the respective streams on the Internet. A program called LoungeFM, which was hosted by the broadcaster Media Broadcast, continued to run on DAB +. In the late afternoon the Lounge FM program was switched on again. According to the information from Media Broadcast, all those involved are now interested in "[...] looking for solutions together with the insolvency administrator to put the company on a solid, economic basis with a comparable offer".

In April 2015, an hourly repeated announcement announced the end of radio broadcasts via DAB + in Germany. The broadcaster stated on its website that the decision was made in agreement with Media Broadcast. One wants to concentrate on the Austrian home market in the future. In the future, the program should only be available in Germany via the Internet. The broadcast via DAB + ended on April 30, 2015.
