The Free Radio B138 is a community radio in Kirchdorf an der Krems ( Austria ) and has been broadcasting 24 hours a day on the 102.3 MHz frequency in the Upper Krems Valley since October 25, 2008. The program can also be received via live stream and in the Kirchdorf cable network on 107.0 MHz. The broadcast studio is located at Bahnhofstrasse 11 in Kirchdorf an der Krems, the office space is located in Kirchdorfer Kultur- und Integrationhaus 16A at Bahnhofstrasse 16a.

The broadcaster is organized as a non-profit association and expressly refrains from commercial product advertising in the program. A management is entrusted with the handling of broadcasting operations.

Program and concept

The program is designed by volunteer broadcasters in open access . The topics are freely selectable, the program design is carried out without any mandatory format specifications. As a non-commercial , free radio , the Free Radio B138 provides the infrastructure required for the program design and offers knowledge transfer in the form of workshops for training and further education of the broadcasters.

The Free Radio B138 sees itself as a local mouthpiece for the people of the Upper Kremstal region and enables active participation and co-determination. The promotion of freedom of expression is the leitmotif of the radio project and is intended to contribute to the democratization of communication.

In accordance with the joint charter of Free Radios in Austria, special funding programs are being created for people and groups of people who have no or only difficult access to the media and who appear to be underrepresented in public and private commercial media. Programs from older people, from children, from young people, from people with a migration background, from people with disabilities and people who experience other social exclusions are particularly encouraged.

The radio broadcasts around the clock, seven days a week. The music selection on the daily playlist is diverse and non-mainstream, the focus is on promoting regional or even less known musicians. The approximately 35,000 titles in the music archive also include over 5,000 Austrian artists. Radio B138 has been an official partner of the BBC World Service since 2012 and broadcasts news in English nine times a day between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m.
