The waterworks portal (actually: portals of an elevated water tank) at Schützenberg in Detmold was entered on October 25, 1990 under the number 358 in the list of architectural monuments in Detmold .

Theodor Petri , at that time the mayor of Detmold, had the city provided with a sewer system from 1893. Grafregent Ernst zur Lippe-Biesterfeld handed over the "perpetual rights of use" to the Berlebeck springs to the citizens of the city in 1898. In 1899, a portal system for the central water supply was built at the springs . The granary on the Schützenberg is also from 1899. A pipe runs down the slope from the springs to the upper mill south of the city center. Here the water is pumped up into the water tank on the summit of the Schützenberg. The reservoir was filled for the first time on March 29, 1900 and the water supply network was put into operation on April 1, 1900. Right from the start, counters were installed with customers to encourage them to be thrifty.

The city center still covers around a third of its water needs from the Berlebeck springs, more precisely 1.1 of 3.4 million cubic meters per year. There are other sources at the Donoperteich in Hiddesen and in Heidental, but these do not normally feed the water reservoir on the Schützenberg.

The actual water tank holds around 1000 m³ and is buried under a mound of earth. Only the two portals to the north and south are visible from the outside. The wall of the north portal is straight and consists of rough rubble stones. The top is finished with a pointed arch frieze . The wall of the southern portal has a concave shape and is made of much larger rubble stones. The wall is semicircular and thus adapts to the shape of the mound. The double-leaf pointed arch iron doors with decorative fittings have recently had to be replaced for safety reasons.
