Radio Classique is a commercial French radio station. The program consists primarily of classical music. In addition, news is broadcast with the focus on economic reporting. In its target group policy, the broadcaster is therefore more oriented towards the upper class. The program is broadcast nationwide on a total of 85 different FM frequencies. Economically, the station belongs to the Les Echos group , which publishes the daily business newspaper of the same name and which in turn belongs to the luxury company LVMH, which is traded on the Paris stock exchange .

Positioned on the French radio market

Radio Classique was founded in 1982 when the government under François Mitterrand broke the radio monopoly of Radio France . At that time, a large number of national and regional radio stations were set up, and the private broadcasters Europe 1 , RMC and RTL , which until then had broadcast exclusively on long wave from abroad and are still the leading private broadcasters , received FM frequencies. Most of those responsible for the new Radio Classique worked for Radio France's France Musique before liberalization . The two stations share the audience interested in classical music as a duopoly to this day; Only in Alsace is there a third regional station with a focus on classical music, Radio Accent 4 .

program

Like the German commercial broadcaster Klassik Radio , Radio Classique endeavors in its music program to reach a broader audience than the public service competition, which can meet higher artistic demands regardless of audience ratings. In addition to film music , popular classical pieces are played that are also popular with listeners without any previous musical training.

The music program is interrupted by short messages and brief interim reports with a focus on economics and politics, whereby efforts are made to distinguish them from topics of tabloid journalism . In addition, there are articles on questions of modern, sophisticated lifestyle , consumer offers and options for individual lifestyle choices.

Market success

At the end of 2010, Radio Classique had an audience rate of 2.1 percent. In France, which is traditionally radio-savvy, this market share means around 1.1 million listeners.
