Radio Exterior de España (REE) is the international service of the public service broadcaster in Spain . The station is based in Madrid and has existed since 1942. The program is broadcast via shortwave , satellite and the Internet .

The program is aimed primarily at Spanish-speaking listeners abroad. It is supplemented by half-hour programs in various foreign languages such as English , French , Arabic , Russian , Portuguese and Sephardic, which usually run during the night. The programs in German, which were introduced in 1990, were limited to one issue per week in 1993 and discontinued entirely in 2004.

The broadcast on shortwave was stopped in October 2014. The shutdown, however, sparked maritime and development aid protests. In addition, the military demanded that the shortwave system be preserved. After five weeks, the program could also be received on shortwave again.
