Radio Massacre International

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Radio Massacre International (short: RMI) is a music trio from England. The band consists of Steve Dinsdale (keyboards, drums), Gary Houghton (guitar, synth) and Duncan Goddard (keyboards, bass). The music is based heavily on the style of Tangerine Dream from the early 1970s and is therefore largely improvised. There were repeated attempts to put the music in a "drawer", the band prefers the term "organic" music.

Surname

The band's unusual name comes from the early 1980s when Steve and Duncan were experimenting with sounds. They discovered that it was possible to plug a guitar into their radio and use it to make unusual noise. The name "radio massacre" was born; the "international" was only added because it sounded better that way. The name therefore has no deeper meaning.

history

The band's history dates back to the 1980s when Steve and Duncan were at school together. Together with Gary they formed the band "DAS" and recorded twelve albums, none of which was ever released.

Steve, who is a native drummer, played in various "scene" bands after moving to London in 1988 , while Duncan began to "collect" synthesizers and record his first solo projects. When he finally discovered space for himself and Steve, who was meanwhile completely disillusioned with the music business, in which they could work together, they recorded the first joint session in 1993, which was later to be released as the album "Startide". Gary joined in with his guitar in 1994, and the band in its current form was born.

The first official release was the double CD "Frozen North" in 1995. In the same year they had their first appearance at the Emma Festival in Sheffield .

In 1996 they were guests on the program " MTV Party Zone". They managed as the first and only band in this show to deliver a live performance of around 20 minutes without a single recognizable beat.

Shortly after this legendary performance, they were the first electronic musicians allowed to play at the Jodrell Bank Observatory , in the shadow of the huge parabolic antenna.

In 1997 they played at the well-known (but now closed) KLEMdag Festival in Nijmegen in the Netherlands in front of their largest audience to date.

The year 2000 saw an appearance at the Alfa Centauri Festival in the Netherlands , and another visit to the Jodrell Bank Observatory. The band's music also served as background music for the BBC program “Don't Look Down” via the over 100 m radio telescope.

At the first Hampshire Jam Electronic Music Festival, RMI played alongside other artists of the genre such as Air Sculpture, Free System Project and Paul Nagle.

In November 2002 the band started their first USA tour. In addition to appearing at the Progwest Festival in LA and at St Mary's Church in Philadelphia, they also played live on the radio twice on the stations KXLU in LA and WXPN in Philadelphia. In the same year an appearance at the E-Live Festival in Eindhoven , Netherlands followed .

At the beginning of 2004 they played a concert in Tapiola , Finland , whose music can be heard on the album "Walking on the Sea". The title of the CD refers to the frozen sea through which the concert hall could be reached.

Since 2003 the band has played regular concerts as part of the concert series at the National Space Center in Leicester , England .

In December 2006 the band released the long awaited 6 CD box "Lost in Space" with previously unreleased material from 1987-2003.
