Radulf (Thuringia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Radulf († after 642 ) was a Duke of Thuringia appointed by the Merovingians .

Life

His origin is unknown, a certain Chamar is named as the father. This was probably a Thuringian nobleman .
At the beginning of the 630s (before 634), the Frankish king Dagobert I installed Radulf as Duke of Thuringia, which at the beginning of the 6th century had been a separate kingdom, but had been defeated and conquered by the Franks in 531. As a duke, Radulf was now supposed to take on the security of the border against the Slavic tribes in the neighborhood, who had come together under Samo around 623/624 and who defeated the Franks in the battle of Wogastisburg in 631 . In fact, Radulf managed to win against the Slavs.
After the deaths of Dagobert (639) and Pippin (640), the smoldering conflict between the Pippinids and Radulf broke out openly. In the course of this, Dux Adalgisel moved with Grimoald , Kunibert of Cologne , the sons of Arnulf of Metz , Duke Bobo , the Alemanni Duke
Leuthari and King Sigibert (the then underage son of Dagobert) against Radulf, who was allied with the Agilolfing Duke Fara . Fara, who ruled in the Wetterau area or in the Aschaffenburg area , was defeated, but Radulf holed up on the Unstrut and could not be defeated by the Frankish army. This was apparently also because Radulf had friends in the royal army and the attack was not carried out by all troops. Among Radulf's friends were the Mainz ( Macancinses ).
Nothing is known about the further rule of Radulf and its duration, Radulf seems to have maintained his largely independent position; it is also a symptom of the incipient decline in power of the late Merovingians , which led to the rise of the Carolingians in the Franconian Empire. After the war against the Pippinids, Radulf apparently made peace with the Slavs and neighboring peoples.
