Kunibert of Cologne (* around 600; † November 12, around 664 in Cologne ) was Bishop of Cologne .

Life

Kunibert was born on the upper Moselle towards the end of the 6th century . He came from the Moselle-Franconian nobility. He was educated at the Metz court of Theudebert II. Kunibert was one of the leading figures of his time with regard to the conception of the empire. Before he became bishop of Cologne around the year 623, he may have been archdeacon in Trier . He became bishop against his will by order of the king and a synod . After his appointment as Bishop of Cologne, a dove is said to have led him to the grave of St. Ursula .

The Fredegar Chronicle reported that Kunibert one of the closest advisers and Mahner the last important as bishop of Cologne Merovingian King Dagobert I was. Dagobert I made Kunibert the regent of his underage son Sigibert III in 634 . After Dagobert's death in 639, Kunibert and the caretaker Pippin agreed on Sigibert as his successor. Pippin and Kunibert made an eternal bond of friendship . It is unknown how the position of Kunibert in the empire after Sigibert III came of age. (approx. 645), from 648 the dated messages break off.

Kunibert was very likely involved in the writing of the Merovingian code of law lex ribuaria , through which the diocese of Cologne was finally integrated into the Merovingian imperial association. He did missionary work with the Saxons and in Friesland . During his term of office, the churches and monasteries in the diocese should have flourished. According to local tradition, he had a church dedicated to St. Construct the predecessor building consecrated to Clemens , in which he was also buried in 664. In 687 the two saints Ewaldi were also buried there. He allegedly also set up the poor pledges of the Lupus brothers at the cathedral .

Kunibert is especially venerated as a saint in Cologne, his memorial day is the traditional day of his death, November 12th. His bones were raised in the Middle Ages and today - like the Ewaldi - are kept in a shrine in the apse of the St. Kunibert Church in Cologne, which is dedicated to him .

As part of the redesign of the sculpture program for the Cologne town hall tower in the 1980s, Kunibert was immortalized by a figure by Majka Wichner on the fourth floor on the east side of the tower.
