List of the Cologne council tower figures
This list includes the total of 124 figures that are on the Cologne council tower .
prehistory
The original depictions, which adorned the tower of the historic town hall with statues of the stonemasons , had already been largely destroyed by the weather at the end of the 17th century . It is not known who the figures represented. The figurative ornamentation of the portal , which was protected by canopy-like covers at the end of the 18th century , and a knight figure next to it, were the remains of the once rich and often vaunted figurative ornamentation of the tower, which was still there at the turn of the 19th century. At the suggestion of the director of the Historical Archive of the City of Cologne Hansen , new figures were then commissioned between 1891 and 1901. The city council announced a competition for these figures to be created, according to which groups of figures had to be designed for the respective tower floors, which according to Hansen's ideas should be given a certain arrangement in their arrangement.
Structure of the figure groups before 1945
- For the ground floor figures of the princes and archbishops important to the history of Cologne
- For the first floor, representatives of the sexes
- For the second floor with guilds
- Men of the arts and science were planned for the third floor
- The top floor was to be decorated with the city's patron saints
The outcome of the competition in 1893 for the first floor came from the first nine figures created by the masters Johann Degen , Alexander Iven , Peter Kürten and Heinrich Schmitz in Baumbergerstein . After almost ten years there was no further work on the figurine jewelry, in 1900 the Cologne sculptors' association, headed by Wilhelm Albermann, received the order for the 71 figures on the upper floors. In addition to Albermann, the performers were the sculptors Degen, Rohte and Barutzky , Schreiner, Steinbach , Kürten, Morgenstern, Stockmann and Dorrenbach, Altmann, Faßbinder and Iven. The figures in Heilbronn sandstone were completed by 1902. The cost, including the canopy of the figures created by Peter Kribben , came to 72,978 marks.
The ground floor figures were already so badly damaged in 1925 that they had to be replaced. They were now, again linked to a competition, made from shell limestone by the artists Erwin Haller , Carl von Mering , Eduard Schmitz jun., Johann Baptist Schreiner , Brandts-Sobieski and Peter Sperling .
Sculpture equipment from the post-war period
The town hall and the council tower were almost completely destroyed by bombing during World War II. In the “rubble heap” of the council tower, the figures on the south side were preserved. Work has been going on since 1959 to rebuild the central town hall complex, and in February 1975 the council tower was restored "in its old form", but still without figurative decorations.
The new sculpture program was developed by a commission of historians from 1981 over a period of five years. The history of the city of Cologne up to the present should be taken into account, but no living people, including no “negative figures” should be depicted. In 1986 the basic concept was finally decided:
- On the ground floor personalities up to the end of the Middle Ages
- On the first to third floors, in chronological ascending order, important personalities for the reputation of the city
- On the fourth floor, patron saints and saints of the city
The corresponding list of characters was first approved in the culture committee; In the decisive city council meeting, however, there were considerable objections on the part of the Green Party , primarily because of the only five women in the entire program of figures. In October 1987, a revised list with a total of 18 women from the 124 personalities depicted was presented, which the Council adopted in January 1988.
The sculptures were made by nine female and 48 female sculptors from Weiberner tuff , a volcanic stone from the Eifel . Five old figures were restored and reused, all others were financed by foundations, the costs amounted to 2.5 million DM . In 1995 all figures of the third generation were finally placed.
For better durability, the figures were completely impregnated with acrylic resin using the so-called "Ibach process". This sealing, however, led to major damage after a short time, so that the figures had to be removed. At the beginning of 2008, sculptors began to create new figures that were exact copies of their predecessors. They were made from the French Savonnières limestone . Since November 2008, all 124 figures have once again adorned the city council tower of Cologne.
