Heinrich Gottfried Wilhelm Daniels

Heinrich Gottfried Wilhelm Daniels , (* December 25, 1754 in Cologne ; † March 28, 1827 there ) was a German lawyer who achieved significant achievements as a university lecturer , judge and author in the French era and in the Prussian Rhineland .

Life

Daniels came from a humble background, his father was a master tailor. Nevertheless, he was able to attend the college in his hometown . There he studied Artes liberales , was licensed in 1769 and a year later doctor of philosophy . At that time his main interest was mathematics , but he also studied law .

In 1775 he became a Doctor of Laws doctorate and when in November advocate the seven-member Electoral Cologne dicastery in Bonn approved. Elector Maximilian Franz of Austria appointed him to the Cologne Appeals Commissariat in 1780, to a professorship at the Bonn Academy in 1783 , to Hofrat in 1786 and to a member of the Higher Appeal Court in Bonn in 1792. After the French invasion, he was appointed a member of the High Tribunal of the Department de Rhin-et-Moselle in Bonn. But because he refused to take the oath in 1797 and the universities were abolished in 1798, he was left without offices. In the same year he was appointed as a law teacher in the new Cologne Central School , the successor to the universities, until its dissolution in 1802 (successor to the law school in Koblenz in 1806). During this time he translated the Code Napoléon (published in 1805) and gave private lectures.

During Emperor Napoleon's visit to the canton of Cologne in 1804, Daniels was appointed deputy (substitute) general procurator at the court of cassation in Paris . He took up this position in 1805. In 1813 he was transferred to the Court of Appeal in Brussels as General Procurator . After the Wars of Liberation he entered Prussian service in 1817 and after a short time in Berlin, where he was a member of the Prussian State Council for the maintenance of progressive French law in the Rhineland, he was appointed the first President of the Rhenish Court of Appeal in Cologne in 1819 .

Possessions

On April 4, 1807, Daniels had the Liège brokerage firm Defay & Minette auction the Fischenicher Fronhof of the St. Maria im Kapitol in Cologne, which was secularized in 1802, for 54,000 francs. The estate included 64.5 hectares of land. Daniels remained the owner of the farm until his death. In 1811 Daniels acquired Metternich Castle . After his death, it was sold again by his daughter. Daniels is also said to have been a member of the Illuminati Order.

Afterlife

A street in Cologne-Neuehrenfeld was named after Gottfried Daniels . His figure is also part of the figure program on the tower of Cologne City Hall .
