Toni Zenz (born June 7, 1915 in Cologne-Ehrenfeld ; † March 18, 2014 ) was a German sculptor .

Life

In the early 30s he attended the Cologne factory schools and studied sculpture . He was a student of Toni Stockheim from 1932 to 1934 and of Wolfgang Wallner from 1934 to 1936 . Since then he has worked as a freelance sculptor. His sculptural style of gentle expressionism is often associated with the art of Ernst Barlach and Käthe Kollwitz .

Toni Zenz last lived in Cologne-Holweide .

Works (selection)

Toni Zenz worked a lot in hardwood and stone, but his main material was bronze . He formed his reliefs and sculptures in clay before having the plaster models made for the casting. Unlike many sculptors, he never made sketches or drawings, but only small models when necessary, especially for the large church commissions such as the portals of the Romanesque church of St. Kunibert on Cologne's banks of the Rhine, of Neu St. Alban in Cologne and of St. Agnes in Hamburg-Tonndorf. Outstanding bronze sculptures are in St. Bernard (Hamburg-Poppenbüttel), in the Heilig-Geist-Kirche (Braunschweig) , in Heilig-Geist (Aachen) , in St. Elisabeth (Essen) and in the Pax-Christi-Kirche ( Essen- Bergerhausen ) to see. The entirety of the sculptural program (portal, altar, ambo, crucifix, etc.) in the new pilgrimage church of St. Ludwig Maria Grignion von Montfort (1963) in Marienheide (Oberbergischer Kreis, North Rhine-Westphalia) comes from him . A wooden Easter candlestick from 1948 is in St. Nikolaus , Cologne-Dünnwald ; three candlesticks belong to the inventory of the Church of St. Johann Baptist in Cologne-Höhenhaus .

In 1957, the then Bishop of Speyer refused to consecrate a wooden crucifix by Toni Zenz and a carved Mother of God by Herbert Belau at the inauguration of the St. Konrad Church in Kaiserslautern . He expressly excluded the two works of art from consecration because, in his opinion, the works of art did not correspond to the healthy religious feelings of the faithful.
