Life

At the age of 13 he attended the Hermann Lietz School at Bieberstein Castle near Fulda . In 1943 he was taken prisoner by the United States. After his release, he began studying with Ewald Mataré at the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

Works of art (selection)

In 1957, the then Bishop of Speyer refused to consecrate a wooden crucifix by Toni Zenz and a carved Mother of God by Herbert Belau at the inauguration of the Church of St. Konrad in Kaiserslautern . He expressly excluded the two works of art from consecration because the works of art did not correspond to the healthy religious feeling of the believers.

In the St. Pius Church in Cologne , von Belau hangs an impressive wooden cross in the choir.

In the Museum Kurhaus Kleve a joint effort of Belau (Joseph and the baby Jesus) and his former fellow students is Joseph Beuys to see.

The Mother of God with Child in St. Marien in Oberhausen was carved by Belau from a single round piece of wood.
