The parish church of St. Marien (actual patronage: Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God and the Virgin Mary ), or Marienkirche for short , is a neo-Gothic parish church in the Marienviertel district of the Ruhr area town of Oberhausen, named after the church . With its two towers, it is one of the city's landmarks.

location

The Marienkirche is located in the central Marienviertel district of Oberhausen, between Mülheimer Straße and Elsa-Brändström-Straße, surrounded by the parish and youth center, the Catholic St. Josefs Hospital and the Catholic primary school Marienschule. The address is Elsa-Brändström-Straße 85.

history

Heath Church

The area of today's inner city of Oberhausen was until 1862 part of Lirich and the now lost Lippern farmers who belonged to the Borbeck mayor's office . Therefore they were looked after by the parish from St. Dionysius . In 1857 the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahngesellschaft provided the parish with a site on which the "Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Mother and Virgin Mary" was consecrated on October 13th, which was called the "Heidekirche" because of its location in the heath. Today the employment agency is located there on Mülheimer Straße. For a long time the Marienkirche was the only church in Oberhausen, which was founded in 1862 (town from 1874) and in 1888 it was the first church in what was later to be the Alt-Oberhausen area to be the seat of a parish.

Second church

Due to the rapid increase in the population due to industrialization, the number of Catholics in Oberhausen also grew. After the Styrum parish of St. Joseph had already built another church in Oberhausen (today Herz Jesu am Altmarkt ) in 1889 , it was decided in 1892 to give up the much too small "Heidekirche" and to replace it with a new building. In 1894 the large church built by the Cologne cathedral builder Friedrich von Schmidt was also given the patronage of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God and the Virgin Mary. It is a neo-Gothic, three-aisled basilica modeled on the Florence Cathedral , the two towers reach a height of 75 meters.

Even after the construction of St. Mary's Church, the population continued to grow, so that in 1920 the parish of St. Michael was founded in the Knappenviertel and in Bermensfeld as a subsidiary parish.

War destruction

St. Mary's Church, like seven other churches in the city, was badly damaged by Allied bombing raids on April 27, 1943 and burned down completely. An emergency church set up in Haus Union was also destroyed at Pentecost 1943.

Since 1945

After the war, the church was quickly rebuilt. The choir area was rebuilt in the 1950s and 1960s by Rudolf Schwarz . In 1958 the parishes of the Holy Spirit ( Bermensfeld ) and the Holy Family (Lirich-Süd) are split off from St. Marien. In the eighties and nineties attempts were made to restore the wall paintings from the pre-war times, but failed. The interior of the church is being completely renovated and, like its model, the Florence Cathedral, is being painted with natural colors. 1986 the seventh organ of the church is inaugurated.

In 2002 the parish church of St. Michael was again added to a branch of St. Marien and its parish of St. Marien. In the course of the restructuring in the Ruhr bishopric, the parishes Heilig Geist (Bermensfeld), Holy Family (Lirich-Süd), St. Johannes Evangelist (Schlad), St. Katharina (Lirich), To Our Lady (Styrum) were established on April 15, 2007 and St. Marien combined to form the new large parish of St. Marien, whose parish church is St. Marien. The Church of the Holy Spirit was again assigned to the parish of St. Mary, the third daughter parish of the Holy Family had belonged to the Lirich parish (now parish) of St. Catherine since 2000.

The parish of St. Marien today has 15,740 members. Of these, 3,753 Catholics belong to the congregation of St. Katharina, 3,429 Catholics to the congregation of St. Johannes Evangelist, 1,955 Catholics to the congregation of Our Lady and 6,603 Catholics to the Mariengemeinde itself. Pastor at St. Marien has been Thomas Eisenmenger since 1999.

Interior

altar

Two white marble blocks form the altar, which contains relics of the martyrs Clemens and Felicitas, which is also indicated by a bronze sculpture by Toni Zenz in front of the altar. The altar cross (also by Toni Zenz) depicts Jesus on the tree of life, with Mary on his breast as a symbol of the church. The roots of the tree point to the altar and thus point to the Eucharist .

Side altar

The Mother of God with Child by Herbert Belau was carved from a single round piece of wood.

tabernacle

The tabernacle (by Karl Schrage) is decorated with 32 ornaments made of 260 rock crystals, which represent buds. The bush-like branches around the tabernacle (by Toni Zenz) are reminiscent of the story of the burning bush in which God is present.

Bells

The bells of the Marienkirche were cast in 1957 by Hans Georg Hermann Maria Hüesker from the company Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher.
