St. Michael

The Church of St. Michael is a listed Catholic church in the Oberhausen district of Knappenviertel . It is a rare example of a brick expressionist building and therefore a sight. Since May 31, 2002, St. Michael has been a branch church of the parish of St. Marien .

location

Michaelskirche is located in the Knappenviertel in the eastern part of the Oberhausen city on Falkensteinstrasse, at the intersection of Pothmannsweg. Adjacent is the Dehon House, which is inhabited by three brothers of the Sacred Heart Priesthood . The Catholic secondary school St. Michael is also nearby.

history

prehistory

Like the rest of the Alt-Oberhausen center, the Knappenviertel was only significantly settled in the course of industrialization. Until 1862 the area was part of the Lirich and Lippern farmers' communities , which belonged to the Borbeck mayor's office . Therefore they were looked after by the parish from St. Dionysius . In 1888, St. Marien Oberhausen was raised to the status of a parish, to which Lirich and the northern inner city of Oberhausen also included the Knappenviertel and Bermensfeld. This parish of St. Mary decided on August 3, 1919 to elevate the eastern parish to its own parish with the patron saint of St. Michael .

1919 to 1945

The first pastor at St. Michael was Franz Schmitz in 1919. The parish first celebrated its services in an emergency church in the Nierhaus hall on Knappenstrasse until 1922, until Karl Joseph Cardinal Schulte , Archbishop of Cologne, signed the deed of establishment for a church. From 1926 to 1929 the architect Fritz Sonnen built the Michaelskirche, in which the first mass was celebrated on December 24, 1929. In October 1930 a small crypt under the choir was also consecrated.

Pastor Wedding was very committed to the design of the church from 1939 onwards. He acquired two statues, and the religion teacher Johannes Geulen was commissioned to design eight colored, lead-glazed church windows and other objects, such as the altar cross, the monstrance or the Easter candlestick.

Michaelskirche was badly destroyed by an air raid in February 1943, from then on services were only held in the poorly repaired rooms behind the library.

Since 1945

After the war, an emergency chapel was set up in the kindergarten while the church was restored. Johannes Geulen designed church windows in turn. In 1953 St. Michael was completely built. In 1957 further renovation measures were decided, during which the entrances were rebuilt and an atrium was installed. In 1958, the Heilig Geist branch church was built in the east of the parish on Hausmannsfeld. It was raised to an independent parish church, which was now responsible for the Bermensfeld district.

In 1961 five bells were purchased (see below), in 1963 a new ceiling was installed. A new altar cross was purchased in 1969 from the workshop of the goldsmiths Polders in Kevelaer, which weighs 50 kg.

In 1990/91 the interior was completely redesigned so that the congregation can now gather around the raised altar. The tabernacle stele is on the highest level. Auxiliary Bishop Franz Grave consecrated the new altar on February 17, 1991. In addition, a new organ was purchased in 1993.

The fifth pastor at St. Michael, Johannes Wiechers, died in 2002. After his death, the independence could no longer be maintained. On May 31, 2002, St. Michael became a subsidiary church of the parish of St. Marien, which in 2007 was joined by the parishes of St. Katharina (Lirich), St. Johannes Evangelist (Schlad), To Our Lady (Styrum) and Holy Spirit (Bermensfeld ) was merged. Since then, Heilig Geist and St. Michael belong to the parish of St. Marien, which has 6,603 members.
