The historical archive of the Archdiocese of Cologne ( Sigle : AEK, ISIL DE-2113 ) is a memorial institution in Cologne that archives the documents of the Cologne diocese administration and other church organizations in the area of the diocese .

The holdings also include bequests and collections. The archive houses holdings totaling 6500 meters of shelves , including around 5300 documents; the oldest document is a property transfer from January 29, 942. With its underground extension from 2007, the AEK offers 20 kilometers of shelf space, making it one of the largest archives in Germany according to its own statements.

organization

The director of the AEK has been the historian and archivist Ulrich Helbach , who has worked there since 1989. Joachim Oepen is the deputy head .

The archive can be used by researchers and interested persons; a reading room offers 20 places.

history

The archive was founded in 1921 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Karl Joseph Cardinal Schulte, as an institution for historical research. First of all, the records of the ecclesiastical administration from before 1801 - the year the old archbishopric was dissolved during secularization - were included in the inventory.

Before the Second World War, documents, registers and files of the Vicariate General and archives of the parishes in downtown Cologne were added.

In 1958 the AEK moved into a new building complex of the archdiocese in Cologne's Altstadt-Nord district. Newer files from the 20th century were added to the holdings, and since the 1980s the archives of other Catholic institutions, clubs and associations.

In 1984 the archive added his first architectural estate to its holdings ( Alfons Leitl ), followed by those of Rudolf Schwarz , Fritz Schaller and others. The connection arises from the church building activity in the post-war period, which had a significant impact on the overall work of many architects of this era.

As part of the archbishopric's savings concept (“Future Today”), which has been developed since 2003, two out of five positions for academic staff have been deleted from the historical archive and total expenditure has been cut by 20 percent.

After the collapse of the city archive in March 2009 (see Historical Archive of the City of Cologne ), the AEK made three kilometers of shelves available for rescued stocks at short notice and, as the asylum archive, took over the storage of the 60,000 - undamaged - parchment documents.

The editorial team of the church archives internet portal (www.kirchliche-archive.de) is located at the AEK.

building

entrance

The building complex with today's archive building at Gereonstrasse 2-4 was built between 1956 and 1958 according to plans by the architects Hans Schumacher and Willy Weyres . It consists of the archbishop's house, the seminary, the seminary church of St. Petrus Canisius and the administrative buildings that were initially used by the cathedral and diocesan library.

The three-storey, angular archive administration building with brick facade and pitched roofs is closed off to the west by an eight-storey building section, the “book tower”, a flat-roofed reinforced concrete skeleton building with brick and glass block infills .

The buildings have been listed since June 19, 1992 and have been included in the list of architectural monuments of the city of Cologne under the number 6532 .

Modern fire protection equipment in the underground extension

From 2005 to 2007, according to plans by the Orend architects and a budget of almost 8 million euros, a three-storey underground extension, invisible from the outside, of 2,200 square meters of new space was built below and next to the old building, which with an additional 15 kilometers of shelf space offers spatial prospects for the next 30 years should offer. At the same time, the listed old building was renovated and a new staircase with a lift was added for better access to the tower and underground parts of the building, and the reading room on the upper floor was equipped with 20 guest workstations.

In 2015, artist Monika Bartholomé added a minimalist wall relief made of thin rods to the curved staircase from the 1950s . a. reflect the archival reduction of documents to what is archivable.
