Ulrich Helbach (* 1958 in Koblenz ) is a German historian and archivist . Since 2004 he has been the director of the historical archive of the Archdiocese of Cologne .

Life

Helbach was born in Koblenz in 1958 and studied history and Catholic theology at the University of Bonn , where he received his doctorate in the 1986/87 winter semester in the subject of Rhenish regional history with a thesis on the Sinzig estate .

After completing his doctorate, he completed his traineeship at the Münster State Archives and at the Marburg Archives School . Helbach began his professional career in 1989 as a scientific archivist in the historical archive of the Archdiocese of Cologne. He has been the director of this archive since 2004. From 2001 to 2004 he was the representative of the Archdiocese of Cologne for forced labor issues.

Since 2016 he has been working as a lecturer at the University of Bonn with exercises in archival studies.

His scientific work focuses on basic work (source editions) on the regional and church history of the Rhineland. He also wrote several works on the subject of contemporary church history, in particular on the role of the Catholic Church in National Socialism.

Memberships

Helbach is a board member in several Rhenish history associations, such as the Historical Association for the Lower Rhine , the Society for Rhenish History and the Architecture Forum Rhineland .
