Franz Carl Guilleaume (born December 30, 1834 in Cologne ; † December 1, 1887 there ) was a German entrepreneur and founder of the Carlswerk . He is called "the younger" to distinguish him from his grandfather Franz Karl Guilleaume (1789–1837).

Life

Franz Carl Guilleaume was born on December 30, 1834 in Cologne to Theodor Guilleaume (1812–1879) and Wilhelmine Dahmen (1811–1838). He attended the higher middle school and the trade school in Cologne. After studying at the University of Liège , he lived temporarily in Belgium and England .

In 1859 he married Antoinette Gründgens (* November 5, 1837, † 1922). Antoinette was born in Aachen as the daughter of the Aachen merchant and iron wholesaler Arnold Gründgens (1794–1875) and Lucia Urlichs. She was an aunt of Gustaf Gründgens .

Franz Carl and Antoinette had three sons and two daughters.

Act

In 1860 Franz Carl Guilleaume became a partner and in 1865 sole owner of the Felten & Guilleaume company . In 1874 he founded the Carlswerk in Cologne-Mülheim as a production facility for contact wires, overhead cables made of copper and aluminum, wire and power cables. Franz Carl Guilleaume developed the Felten & Guilleaume company into one of the largest companies in the field of wire production. He was largely responsible for the introduction of cast steel wire ropes in mining , the further development of barbed wire for grids and fences and the construction of multi-core cables for telephony . Franz Carl Guilleaume was one of the founders of the Association of Industrialists for the Cologne District in 1881.
