Agilolf of Cologne was bishop of Cologne from 745 to around 752 .

Life

11th century traditions see Agilolf as Abbot of Stablo-Malmedy before he became Bishop of Cologne. His appointment to the office of Bishop of Cologne took place around 745 at the request of the Frankish imperial aristocracy. Agilolf was a representative of the reform movement around St. Boniface . His participation in the last synod of Boniface is documented by a letter from Pope Zacharias dated May 1, 748. The year of his death may be 752.

Adoration

Agilolf is venerated today as a saint . The day of remembrance assigned to him is July 9th; on this day his supposed bones were transferred to Cologne in 1092. In later traditions Agilolf is often equated with a monk from Malmedy who was slain by robbers; According to the current state of knowledge, this is a mix-up. The later Archbishop of Cologne , Anno II. , Had the bones of this slain monk transferred to Cologne. A street in the Cologne-Neustadt-Süd district was named after him.

Agilolf altar and shrine

The shrine of Agilolf set up next to the altar

The 5.5 m high and almost 7 m wide carved altar was made in Antwerp around 1520 and, according to the cathedral builder Barbara Schock-Werner, is one of the most important and largest of its time due to its extraordinary wealth of figures and imaginative costumes. He was originally in the church Marie degrees next to the cathedral and came after their demolition in 1817 in the Cathedral .

Tower figure

A figure of the Cologne town hall tower shows Agilolf with a falcon in his hand. According to legend, a knight doubted his holiness after Agilof's death. This is no more a saint than his hunting falcon can sing. Then the falcon began to sing and Agilolf's sanctity was thus proven. The figure made by Elisabeth Baumeister-Bühler can be found on the fourth floor on the south side of the town hall tower.
