Mobile truck being loaded onto an eight-axle wagon

The Mobiler is a hydraulic system mounted on a truck that is used to load swap bodies and ISO containers (with adapters) onto rail freight cars . The special thing about this technology is that container handling is possible by the truck driver alone, independent of a special infrastructure or external personnel, directly at the loading platform .

functionality

The truck driver positions his vehicle on the loading line parallel to the loading track or the wagon to be loaded / unloaded . The driver can now use the remote control to load a loaded container onto the wagon or a container from the wagon onto the loading area. It can be handled quickly and easily almost anywhere by a single person without outside help. Unlike the container terminal, the movement is exclusively horizontal . A basic requirement for this transport is a suitable train station or a siding with solid ground (does not have to be paved).

Development and history

Mobile sheet

The Mobiler was invented in 1995 by Wolfgang Bermüller. The first mobile trucks were used in Switzerland as early as 1997. In 1999, Wolfgang Bermüller entered into a cooperation with Palfinger-Hebetechnik GmbH (today: Palfinger Europe GmbH ), which took over the production of the mobiler. In 2001, Palfinger signed a cooperation agreement with Rail Cargo Austria (RCA) , which, following a successful pilot test with the Stiegl brewery, took over the marketing of the mobiler. At RCA, the mobile developed from a pilot project to its own business field in the intermodal sector and won several logistics and innovation awards. The number of customers increased and the transport volume was increased many times over from 25,000 t in 2002 to 419,000 t in 2007.

As of 2016, the RCA's mobile business unit has over 800 containers in its equipment , with which almost a million tons of different goods are transported: Palletized goods in tarpaulin swap bodies, liquids and hazardous goods in tank containers, light bulk goods , building materials and powdery bulk goods such as fertilizers or plastic granulates in Bulk containers. With the increase in volume came economic success. The Mobiler is now called KV scooter by its manufacturer .

Advantages of mobile logistics

  • Shorter transport routes have to be covered by road, which in times of rising petrol prices not only reduces environmental pollution, but also costs.
  • Enables companies without a siding to have easier rail transport. This means that traffic that would otherwise be carried out by truck can be shifted to the railways.
  • The Mobiler technology combines the high capacity of the railways with the flexibility of the truck and is therefore also economically interesting for the railways.
  • The flexible pre- and post-carriage by the mobile truck favors the formation of round trips and triangular traffic on the rail.
