Johann Maria Farina (1685–1766)

Johann Maria Farina , Italian Giovanni Maria Farina , according to the Latin birth certificate Johannis Maria Farina (born December 8, 1685 in Santa Maria Maggiore , then part of the Duchy of Milan , Italy ; † November 25, 1766 in Cologne ), was the inventor of an aqua mirabilis (Scented water), which he called Eau de Cologne . In the meantime, Eau de Cologne has become the name of an entire class of fragrances.

biography

Farina joined the trading company of his brother Johann Baptist in Cologne, which was founded in 1709 in 1714 and was significantly involved in the development of the company " Johann Maria Farina opposite Jülichs-Platz ". In 1723 they moved into the house at Obenmarspforten 23 “across from Jülichs- Platz”. Johann Maria Farina named his unsurpassed elixir in honor of his new hometown “Eau de Cologne”, in German cologne . Its scent was the scent of the 18th century courtyards. If you said eau de cologne in the 18th century , you meant the scent of Farina. After the French Revolution, at the end of the 18th century, many tried to copy the fragrance and name of Eau de Cologne . Since there was still no trademark protection , Eau de Cologne became the name of an entire class of fragrances. The city honored its citizens with a statue on the council tower .

"My scent is like an Italian spring morning after the rain, oranges , grapefruits , lemon, bergamot , cedar , lime and the flowers and herbs of my homeland."

Johann Maria Farina died childless. His grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne. A memorial plaque lies on the grave site of his great-nephew Johann Baptist Farina (Hauptweg).
