City Hall Tower Cologne: Heinrich von Beeck

Heinrich von Beeck ( also Heinrich van Beeck, Henri van Beeck, Henricus von Beeck ) was a Cologne chronicler of the 15th century . In the years 1469 to 1472 he wrote the Cologne rhyming chronicle Agrippina and had certified copies made in calligraphy under his supervision with his own handwritten signature . The Agrippina , which depicts the history of the city from its beginnings to 1419, is considered to be one of the most important sources of Koelhoff's chronicle from 1499. The von Beecksche chronicle testifies to the self-image and the prominent position of Cologne in the time immediately before the elevation of the City in the imperial estate by Emperor Friedrich III. in 1475.

Little is known in research about the person of Heinrich von Beeck. Because of its name, it is believed that it came from Holland . From 1471 to around 1475, Beeck worked as a department store manager in Mainz . In his chronicle, he mentions manuscripts from the Sankt Alban Abbey near Mainz , which he had viewed.

As part of the redesign of the figurative decoration on the Cologne town hall tower , Heinrich von Beeck was honored with a figure by Hans Karl Burgeff as one of the personalities deserving of the city , which has been on the first floor on the north side of the tower since 1990. The figure handed over on January 23, 1990 was made possible by a donation from the Annemarie and Helmut Börner Foundation.
