Rafael Bombelli , also Raffaele Bombelli or Raphael Bombelli (* 1526 in Bologna , † 1572 probably in Rome ), was an Italian engineer and mathematician .

As an engineer in the service of a Roman nobleman, he made great contributions to agriculture in southern and central Italy (including drainage of swamps).

The introduction of mathematical brackets using round brackets is attributed to him. In addition, his Algebra (Italian: L 'Algebra ) , published in 1572, contained not only negative numbers , but even imaginary numbers and corresponding extensions of Nicolo Tartaglia's and Gerolamo Cardano's solution theories to algebraic equations . L'Algebra comprises a total of five volumes (volumes IV and V did not appear until 1929 from his estate) and represents a summary of the mathematical knowledge from Bombelli's time as well as his own research results. Leibniz and Euler are said to have later commented positively on this work.

The lunar crater Bombelli is named after him.
