Rafael Martínez Sansegundo

Rafael Martínez Sansegundo (born April 18, 1964 in Molina de Aragón , Spain, † February 19, 1989 in Saragossa , Spain) was a Spanish basketball player .

The 2.08 meter tall Martínez Sansegundo played in the Spanish Primera División for CAI Zaragoza , to which he had belonged since the 1979/80 season. In the 1983/84 season he won the Copa del Rey with his teammates . Martínez Sansegundo, however, had to retire from sport in January 1989 due to his health problems. By then he had already played five internationals for Spain and was previously a member of the national junior team. He died at the age of 24 in Saragossa in the Miguel Servet Hopital of the consequences of an operation on the artery that had been carried out a few days earlier in Houston, USA and as a result of which he later fell into a coma. Mártinez Sansegundo was buried in his birthplace, Molina de Aragón. The then Spanish national basketball coach Antonio Díaz Miguel described the death of Martínez Sansegundo as a great loss, not only because of the young Spaniard's human qualities, but also because of his existing talent.
