Rafael Pombo
José Rafael de Pombo y Rebolledo (born November 7, 1833 in Bogotá , Republic of New Granada , † May 5, 1912 , ibid) was a Colombian writer and diplomat .
Life
Rafael Pombo initially trained as a mathematician and engineer at a military academy. He lived and worked for a while as Colombia's Ambassador to the United States , where he translated nursery rhymes into Spanish in New York , edited in two volumes: Cuentos pintados para niños and Cuentos morales para niños formales .
Rafael Pombo wrote an extensive work, but the best known are his children's books : Michín , Juan Chunguero , Pastorcita , La Pobre Viejecita , Simón el Bobito , El Gato Bandido , and El Renacuajo paseador .
After 17 years in the United States, he returned to Colombia and became a celebrated translator and journalist. In 1905 he was named Colombia's best poet. He stayed in Colombia until his death and is buried in Bogotá's main cemetery.
