Gerardus Johannes Geers

Gerardus Johannes Geers (born December 10, 1891 in Delft , † May 2, 1965 in Groningen ) was a Dutch Romance philologist , Hispanist and translator.

life and work

Geers studied Dutch philology in Leiden and received his doctorate in 1917 under Christianus Cornelius Uhlenbeck with the thesis The adverbial and prepositional Prefixes in Blackfoot (Leiden 1917). Then he went to Madrid (as a career as an ethnologist was prevented by the World War) as tutor of the Dutch ambassador to Madrid , but was expelled in 1920 for socialist activities and switched to Hispanic studies (as a teacher in Enschede ).

From 1928 to 1932 he was a private lecturer in Spanish at the University of Groningen , then a teacher in The Hague and from 1947 again in Groningen, first lecturer (lecturer), from 1961 associate professor for Spanish (retired in 1962).

Geers translated Miguel de Unamuno , Ramón Gómez de la Serna , Joseph de la Vega , Juan Antonio de Zunzunegui , José Ortega y Gasset , Juan Ruiz , Pío Baroja , Camilo José Cela and Luis Díez del Corral into Dutch.
