Rafael Rodríguez Urrusti (born August 22, 1922 in Oviedo ; † October 5, 2000 ibid) was a Spanish sculptor and artist from Asturias who mainly worked with iron and created murals.

biography

Rafael Rodríguez Urrusti trained at the Fábrica de Armas de La Vega , an arms factory in his hometown. There he worked as a master gunsmith for 21 years . Even then he was working as an iron smith in his spare time . He set up his own workshop and began to create his first works of art. In 1960 Urrusti gave up his work in the factory and devoted himself entirely to art. The majority of his works are iron sculptures and murals, most of which can be seen in Oviedo.

Urrusti had his first exhibition in 1975. The following year he was appointed Maestro Mayor de los artesanos de Asturias . In 1977 he created the San Mateo de hierro , the trophy for an annual prize that honors artists and scientists from Asturias .

In his hometown of Oviedo, Urrusti is represented with numerous works of art in public spaces. Its themes are figures and symbols of Asturian history and tradition, religious work and depictions of animals and people in everyday life. He created the monumental Cruz de la Victoria , which is located on the Jesus statue on Monte Naranco near Oviedo.

Rafael Rodríguez Urrusti also created murals, such as panels at Oviedo Central Station - including three paintings depicting the map of Asturias - and a mural in the Otero district, dedicated to St. Matthew the Apostle to celebrate the Pantocrator Festival. Other works include images of the apostles John , Matthew and Peter on the facade of the Church of San Juan el Real , the grilles of the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias and an image of the Asturian national hero Pelayo in the Centro Asturiano in Buenos Aires . He also created smaller works that were distributed internationally. Rafael Rodríguez Urrusti died on October 5, 2000 in his hometown of Oviedo.

His son Antonio Urrusti and his grandson Kiko are also active as iron sculptors.
