Live and act

His exact place of birth and the place of his studies are still unclear. In all likelihood he was enrolled as a student at the University of Padua , where he received his degree in civil and canon law .

After graduating, he moved to Pavia for at least ten years , but always stayed in contact with his hometown, to which he returned at the beginning of the 15th century as editor of the Digesto and Codice . He made numerous trips, first to Siena and Padua , where he began his academic career and was considered one of the greatest experts in his field.

Between 1414 and 1415 he was President of the Council of Constance in order to act as legal advisor with other colleagues from Padua. In addition, he was involved in the defense of the antipope John XXIII , who was accused of simony .

One of his fundamental theories was the possibility of applying common law , provided that it was clearly justified, even if it contradicts common law .

His professional career was closely linked to that of his friend and fellow citizen Raffaele Raimondi. He was charged with plagiarism along with Raimondi . They were accused of having appropriated the thoughts and works of their master Cristoforo Castiglione.

In 1420 he managed to escape from the plague and he left Padua. Seven years later he fell ill and died. He was buried in the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua.
