Raffaele Melia

Raffaele Melia (born May 6, 1804 in Rome , † November 11, 1876 in Rome) was an Italian religious priest and general rector of the Pallottines from 1856 to 1862.

In 1837 he joined the community founded by Saint Vincenzo Pallotti . Seven years later he became a doctor in theology and a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and went to London . On March 7, 1848, he took the religious vows and became rector of the London branch. On February 16, 1856 he became Rector General of the Community.

Raffaele Melia failed to resolve the Pallottines' internal quarrels and to obtain confirmation of the rules of the order. At the urgent request of Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman , he resigned from office in early 1862 and traveled to London.

He worked in England for 30 years. He wrote several books in different languages. He died of pneumonia in Rome at the age of 72 . He drew this to himself in the confessional. He was the first Pallottine to be buried in the Campo Verano cemetery.
