Raffaello

Raffaello is a spherical coconut - almond confectionery by the manufacturer Ferrero , which was launched under the brand name in 1990 .

Structure and ingredients

Raffaello consists of a spherical waffle filled with a white milk cream and a white blanched almond. It is wrapped in a layer of coconut. Raffaello does not contain chocolate, not even white. However, it does contain lactose , which makes Raffaello intolerant for lactose-intolerant consumers. It also contains almonds instead of hazelnuts , which is at least relevant for hazelnut allergy sufferers . The total almond content makes up 8 percent of the weight, the total coconut content 23.5 percent.

According to the list of ingredients, Raffaello contains:

  • Vegetable fats (palm, shea)
  • Desiccated coconut
  • sugar
  • Skimmed milk powder
  • almond
  • wheat flour
  • Sweet whey powder
  • Natural Aroma
  • Emulsifiers Lecithins (soy)
  • Sodium hydrogen carbonate raising agent
  • salt
  • Vanillin

As in the case of the Rocher product, also produced by Ferrero, and the Giotto biscuit ball, the advertising for the product suggests that it is an exclusive product. The emphasis on the fact that Raffaello does not contain any cocoa ingredients is constitutive for the image of the product.

According to the German advertising slogan “German little thing”, which is coveted in the USA, Ferrero is currently (since May 2008) advertising “completely ... without chocolate”. This is obviously ambiguous, as it alludes to the complete, i.e. complete absence of chocolate mentioned above, but also emphasizes the “exclusivity” mentioned above as a “perfect” product.

Christmas price increase

In 2010, Raffaello was sold in Christmas packaging for almost three times the normal price, according to the NDR consumer magazine Markt (50 versus 18 cents per ball).

Imitation product

In the Ukraine there is an imitation product of the Landrin company with a similar design and recipe, against which Raffaello has so far lost a two-year legal battle, while it was able to enforce its rights against the Landrin company in Russia , Latvia and Georgia .

Table of contents

On November 1, 2017, a judgment by the Frankfurt Regional Court - not yet final because Ferrero has appealed against it - becomes known that the manufacturer must indicate not only the amount of content but also the number of pieces on the pack. “Consumers either need to see the number or it needs to be on the packaging. In our opinion, this is the only way to correctly assess the amount, ”said Wiebke Franz from the Hessen consumer center.
