Sharif, who is not related to the Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif , comes from a family known in Pakistan with a military background. His father, Muhammad Sharif, was a major in the Pakistani Army . His brother Shabbir Sharif died in the war against India in 1971 and was posthumously honored with the country's highest military awards.

Raheel Sharif is married and has three children.

Sharif was most recently responsible for the training and further education of the Pakistani soldiers. In doing so, he implemented a shift in priorities enforced by Ashfaq Parvez Kayani . The army should no longer just be ready for a conflict with India, but should also be able to take effective action against domestic terrorism.

Appointment to army chief

On November 27, 2013, Sharif was named the country's new army chief. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ignored two senior generals in this election. Kayani, the predecessor in office, had also recommended another general. The background is likely that Raheel Sharif is considered apolitical.

On November 26, 2016, Qamar Javed Bajwa was appointed as his successor by the government.
