Qamar Javed Bajwa (born November 11, 1960 in Karachi ) is the 16th and current Chief of Staff of the Army of Pakistan . As a four-star Army General, he was appointed to military service on November 29, 2016. According to Forbes magazine , Bajwa is the 68th most powerful person in the world.

childhood and education

Qamar Javed Bajwa belongs to the Jat people . His family is from Ghakhar Mandi, Punjab . His father died when Bajwa was 7 years old. He was raised by his mother who died in 2013. Bajwa joined the army in 1978 and attended the Pakistan Military Academy. He then went to North America and attended the Canadian Army Command and Staff College in Canada and the Naval Postgraduate School in the USA. He also attended the National Defense University Pakistan.

Military career

After joining the army in 1978, Bajwa attended the Pakistan Military Academy. He left the academy as an officer . In 1992, Bajwa briefly served in the Northern Light Infantry Regiment in Kashmir . Bajwa worked for the X. Corps as a staff officer in Rawalpindi . Prior to his promotion to one-star general, he served as Chief of Staff in the X. Corps. He also served as a commander in Northern Pakistan and subsequently became a two star general.

Bajwa served in 2007 as the commander of the Pakistani UN peacekeeping mission in the Congo. In the Congo, he served as the commander of the brigade under General Bikram Singh's regiment. After his promotion to two-star general, Bajwa took over the command of a unit in Gilgit-Baltistan in 2009 . In 2011 he was awarded the Hilal-I-Imtiaz.

Bajwa was then employed as a teacher at various military institutions. In 2013 he was promoted to three-star general and was responsible for the X. Corps in Rawalpindi for the third time as commander. He was a first grade officer. The X. Corps are a highly respected unit that controls the situation in Kashmir. In 2014, Bajwa was appointed commander of the Baloch Regiment.

In 2015, Lieutenant Bajwa was appointed head of the training unit at the Army headquarters in Rawalpindi. He worked in the staff of the then army chief Raheel Sharif .

The then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif confirmed the end of office of Raheel Sharif, who contradicted rumors of a second term. Sharif's successor was to be chosen between Lieutenant Zubair Hayat and Javed Ramday, both of whom were close to the Sharif family. However, Nawaz Sharif announced Qamar Javed Bajwa as his successor in September 2016. According to analysts, his support for democracy earned him the office.

As army chief, Bajwa massively expanded the fight against terrorism, known through two military operations, in February and July 2017. Bajwa denied emerging allegations that the army played a role in the impeachment of Nawaz Sharif.
