Rail & Fly

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rail & Fly is an offer from Deutsche Bahn in cooperation with various airlines . It enables air travelers who depart or land from / to an airport in Germany , Basel or Salzburg to travel free of charge or for a fixed price from / to any Deutsche Bahn train station on a direct route to / from the airport.

This offer can only be booked together with a flight with the airline or with the tour operator. Many, but not all, airlines offer Rail & Fly. Some companies only offer the ticket in certain booking classes. The offer for passengers is not available directly from Deutsche Bahn. For a price, depending on the airline, of mostly 29 euros (2nd class, one way), a direct train journey from any German train station to the respective airport or the return journey from the airport without a train connection is possible. For long-haul flights, the Rail & Fly option is often completely free.

When booking an economy class flight ticket, Rail & Fly tickets for 2nd carriage class are usually issued, and 1st class for business or first class tickets.

The Rail & Fly tickets are usually issued via the notification of a pick-up number by the airline / tour operator, which can then be used to purchase a corresponding ticket at Deutsche Bahn ticket machines no earlier than 72 hours before departure. Rail & Fly tickets are also valid one day before departure and one day after arrival.

IATA code is QYG for "Railway Germany". With some airlines, travel booking portals and corresponding meta search engines, a Rail & Fly ticket can only be booked by specifying QYG as the start or destination “airport”. The actual airport is then a transfer point, while Rail & Fly is often presented as a one-hour wildcard “flight” with AccesRail (IATA airline code 9B) or Deutsche Bahn (IATA airline code 2A). Its booking reference (5 or 6 digits) sometimes serves as a pick-up code, otherwise it is communicated to the passenger separately.
